Understandable.
Personally I hardly understand this concept. As I do not have the resources or technology to produce my own art work I am in result imitative, not innovative. The way I see it I am merely making due with what resources I can get ahold of and making use of it the best I can. I have no hostile intentions, I am simply adapting the only way I can. Concepts such as don't use that I created it are unknown of to me. To me it makes about as much sense as saying God made that tree so I have no right to cut it down and make it into a table.
After all artwork is aligned shapes and colors, if I was able to arrange the shapes and colors on my own of corse I would. But to suddenly have some one challenging me to a duel simply because I found a photo online and set it as my desk top wall paper, or, background, seems strange to me. I do have standards and I do respect other peoples art, your probably wondering, if I had made such art work and someone else modified it and used it the same way I do with theirs would I like that?
Actually yes, yes I would, I would simply be glad it went to a good use, because that is the concept I do understand.
However, if some one had told me they did not, I would simply delete the modified version, leave a white background, and in that white background text that reads "Image Needed". And that would be the end of it. That's all people would have to do, simply explain it to me and I respect their wishes, though I have been known to cut them out of contact or manipulate them into doing it for me if their rude about it.
But, I do my best to be reasonable. Some people argue, are rude in reply, and don't understand why, or understand what is explained to them. But, I try to be reasonable.
If theft was actually my intention after all I wouldn't target artwork to steal, I'd more go after say, military pay rolls or cargo freighters. Something it actually makes sense to want to steal.
There are a few ways you could be innovative (or at least original). Microsoft Paint may be a tool that is frowned on a lot but hey if it helps you illustrate your thing then use your mouse to draw it, lol. You can also buy a range of many reasonably-priced Android tablets and phones around the $50 or $70 margin that let you download drawing applications, which are like portable versions of desktop drawing software. In some instances they also let you edit images; I use my tablet as an all-in-one suite for that stuff.
I get ya. If you are unsure of a particular source you could probably add "the credit goes to the original source; I do not know where it originally came from". Some people get tetchy about it because it is a job for some. An art theif could potentially make more money off of another artist's image than the artist would have originally; just like on Twitter were a bot may take another person's tweet and get many more retweets from it. The fact that somebody who doesn't own an image could use it and claim it to be theirs and possibly make money from it is sickening, so you could probably imagine the caution behind it.
Alternatively you could request for an artist to do a sketch for you free of charge, so you can have your monster realised and the artist can get some recognition from it when you mention their name. To be honest I don't think you should be cutting people out like that since you still don't own the rights or permission to use it. I don't know of the consequences but there could be some possible legal problems or you being witchhunted by the artist's followers. Say somebody used a picture of your face without permission and you were fuming; you want this person to take it down but because you were "rude" they cut you out and don't respect your requests. It doesn't make sense.
Problem is people would see that kind of stuff from a mile away, figuratively speaking. Art theft happens all the time but some people aren't aware of it. Always link sources, or at the very least mention it does not belong to you. Try to contact the original artist if possible to be 100% secure.
